Our Science curriculum intent

• For children to see themselves as scientists (Science Capital): We aim to empower pupils to view themselves as capable scientists, increasing their confidence and identity within the subject. The concept of “Science Capital” includes knowledge, attitudes, experiences, and resources related to science, helping pupils realise that science is for everyone and they have the potential to contribute to it.

• To have the scientific knowledge and vocabulary to engage with the world around them: Developing scientific knowledge and language proficiency is essential for pupils to apply their skills when working scientifically and articulate their understanding by engaging in discussions about scientific concepts confidently.

• To have the skills to be able to work scientifically: Our Science lessons focus on equipping pupils with the practical skills needed for scientific inquiry. This includes critical thinking, observation, experimentation, and analytical skills that enable them to explore scientific concepts and solve problems.

• To understand and explore the natural world: The curriculum encourages pupils to engage with and appreciate the natural world, fostering a deeper understanding through exploration and discovery.

• To be curious about the world around them: Instilling curiosity is central to the science curriculum. We encourage pupils to ask questions and seek answers which help them become lifelong learners with a natural interest in understanding how things work.

This intent ensures that science education is holistic, developing not only knowledge but also skills, curiosity, and identity in relation to science.
