Meet the Governors

What does a school governor do?

School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors hold the main responsibility for finance in schools and work with the head teacher to make decisions about balancing resources.

Governing bodies have three key roles:

  • To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • To hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

The governing body's duties include:

  • Monitoring pupil/student achievement and progress
  • Setting the school's vision, aims and policies
  • Monitoring progress on the school’s priorities
  • Monitoring the impact of policies
  • Determining how the school's budget is spent
  • Appointing staff and dealing with grievance and disciplinary hearings and appeals
  • Setting standards for pupils' behaviour and discipline
  • Making sure school buildings are welcoming and safe.

Who can be a governor?

Governors come from all sections of the community and all walks of life. They can be parents, staff at the school, residents from the local area, representatives of community groups and businesses. It is important that you can work as part of a team, and can give commitment to the school.

Our Governing Body

Our Governing Body strives to ensure the school achieves the best it can, that our children are well taught and well cared for and that our staff are supported.

We want Overdale Infant School to be a place where our children feel safe and can develop and learn. We also recognise our part in the Overdale community and want to ensure our links with the junior school and the PA, as well as the wider community, are as strong as possible.

Our Governing Body has recently elected new members. At present all the relevant checks and documentation are being completed. Once this process is complete details of our new members of the Governing Body will be updated.

The Trustees of OAK Multi Academy Trust believe it is important that boards reflect the diversity of the school communities they serve. Diverse boards promote inclusive school environments and provide diverse role models for staff and young people.

The governors are currently collecting data on the diversity of the board, including data on age, gender and ethnicity. They will use that data to inform their recruitment and training needs and ensure there is always a diverse range of perspectives around the table to support robust decision-making.

Due to our relatively small governing bodies, we do not publish this diversity data online as individual governors could be identified and we have a legal obligation to protect their personal data.
